The last thing you need when you build a new garage is to have it looking like a messy wardrobe a month down the line. What you need to do is to plan a garage that incorporates a different space to accommodate each of your storage needs, leaving ample room for what it was originally built - to park your car!
1. Throw away your junk!
Garage Organization Systems
It is quite amazing how very like a pack rat we turn out to be as we grow older, accumulating multitudes of junk over the years. Take a minute when you plan a garage, to think of only the necessities you will need to store, throw away the useless stuff taking up space or better yet, have a garage sale!
2. Organize yourself
It is essential that once you decide WHAT you are going to need to store, you then decide how exactly you plan to organize it. Take measurements and if needed, draw a plan. Make a list of all the structures that you will need to organize your space. For instance, storage cabinets, storage shelves, a workbench, racks and hooks, bins, a pegboard for cords and other supplies and hooks for bigger utensils such as brooms and rakes, electricity power points etc. Overhead storage can also be useful to store away things that will only be used on rare occasions.
3. Categorize and containerise your stuff
Will you really need to use ALL of the things you store at the same time? Why not map out where you will store equipment that will only be used once in a way. Avoid storing seasonal equipment such as snow blowers in a place that will take up most of your storage area. A pulley system can be installed, helping you to relegate other items that are not used often to the walls. Put away smaller utensils that are easily left lying around in the way and containerise them in bags and boxes. Label opaque boxes so that you know exactly what's inside.
4. Safety first!
A garage is usually the first place you think of, to store hazardous substances such as pesticides and sharp tools that are best kept out of the way of children. Make sure that when you plan a garage interior, you allocate specific areas to the storage of such materials and equipments.
5. The aesthetics matter!
Lastly, think of the fun, yet equally important factors, such as the colour of your paints, the texture of your cabinet and shelf surfaces (wood or metal?). Moreover, you can design your plan based on any specific theme. Colour coding is important for if your garage is rather dark and windows have not been installed for safety purposes, a light coloured paint can do wonders.
Paying careful attention to detail when you plan a garage can result in a functional and well organized yet elegant and aesthetically correct structure that will add value to your property.
